Through the recycling of my old sports jerseys and apparel, I propose a new series of textile banners with simple, but provocative socio-political statements or titles that reflect my new (and shifting) perceptions and ideas about gender, sexuality and identity.
I chose to use my own rather large collection sports jerseys as the resource material in part because in my broader practice, I favor using existing, printed material as the starting ingredients for a new work of art. That is, creation through synthesis and re-interpretation.
As a gay man who has long fetishized athletic fashions, I'm attracted to using these bright, hypermasculine, perhaps even aggressive sports jerseys. And it's even more fun to then subvert these associations in the new artworks; for example, by turning a macho football jersey into a banner that boldly states 'Real Men are Real Women'. — Brian Kenny
