A Spoonful of Sugar

The new body of work, “A Spoonful of Sugar,” comes just in time to bring a little cheer to this “out of the ordinary” time we are experiencing.
The show was originally named “Boop!” after the larger bowling pin of “Obelix and Dogmatix,” but was changed in a nod to today’s social distancing that forbids all physical contact; even little “Boops” on the nose.

“A Spoonful of Sugar,” inspired by her “Mary Poppins” pin, is the new chapter in Bernice’s diary, which uses bowling pins to pay tribute to her brother and father who passed away.

Her father, an avid bowler, was playing in the finals of a bowling tournament at the same time her brother was being born.

The vintage bowling pins that she sculpts are like fragments of a personal diary reminiscing of the good old days and icons of the past that allow her to keep a connection to the time when she was growing up with her family. “A Spoonful of Sugar” may not be the cure for COVID-19, but will help bring a smile, “In a most delightful way.”

ABOUT BERNICE LUM

Born and raised in Toronto, Bernice Lum spread her wings ever so slightly and moved to Oakville to study graphic design at Sheridan College. After graduating in 1984, she freelanced for several companies including Citytv/Muchmusic's design department.

In 1988 she decided to spread her wings further and fly to London, England. While there, she freelanced for numerous design consultants and also began her illustration career.

Her illustration crossed over from corporate to packaging, editorial and children’s books. She has published approximately 50 children’s books and continues her commercial and personal works with clients in the UK, North America, Korea, and Japan.

Her two “not-so children’s books,” '12 Steps to Heaven' and 'More Steps to Heaven' sold over 150,000 thousand copies combined worldwide.

After a nine-year stay in the UK, Bernice resides in Toronto and now continues a new chapter in her career of recreating vintage bowling pins to her most favourite iconic characters.
