Contraband
ART / VOICE from Galerie Youn on Vimeo.
Ian Healy’s depiction of the contemporary figure navigates a precarious line where meaning meets form. His works use a variety of mediums – pastels, oil paint, or watercolour – often produced in quick bursts to portray a sense of urgency and tension. He uses humour, historic references, and imagination to tell stories or narratives that are brought to life with an exuberance of colours. The title “Contraband” refers to Healy’s current interest in the history of Lithuanian book smugglers who desperately tried to preserve their language through books, in the face of imperialism.
