Yuriko Kubota - On Earth - Final

For On Earth, Yuriko Kubota continues using her double layer technique to further investigate the qualities of motion, stillness, perception, and the materiality of the photographic image. Started in response to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of 2011, the series On Earth focuses on the relationship between humans and natural forces, and the ways that they exist within the same world and share its interrelated complexity.

While utilizing advances in photographic technology, Kubota still slices and layers each image by hand, treating these works as an extension of her oil painting practice.

Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, she received her B.F.A at Joshibi University of Art and Design. She has been living and working in Canada since 2004.

Her works have shown in various galleries around the world including in Tokyo, New York, Toronto, and Shanghai.

Kubota currently lives and works in Toronto.
