“My work uses references from images of people forging their way on the frontiers of the wilderness and rearranges them into a conceptually layered world that examines the anatomy of the creative process. While modern technologies—such as cloud computing, social networking and the global community of the internet—present new challenges and opportunities for contemporary creators, in my world they are represented within a pastoral landscape as a way to create a timeless perspective on imaginative thinking.”

Statement

For the past decade, my practice has been focused primarily on a series of drawings about wanderers of a whimsical mindscape known as Yawnder. Each drawing adds to an evolving narrative labyrinth about the mystical nature of inspiration, the search for innovative creation and the dissemination of ideas. My work uses references from images of people forging their way on the frontiers of the wilderness and rearranges them into a conceptually layered world that examines the anatomy of the creative process. While modern technologies—such as cloud computing, social networking and the global community of the internet—present new challenges and opportunities for contemporary creators, in my world they are represented within a pastoral landscape as a way to create a timeless perspective on imaginative thinking.

I have always drawn allegories for themes that straddle mental and physical worlds. The setting for the drawings that I will be exhibiting at Drawing Now is Beyawnder—a new part of my mindscape where the wanderers ponder and play among a strange assortment of abstractions. It’s reminiscent of an art fair where inspiration and a sense of wonder are abound for those who open their minds to the attractions.

These days there is a lot of concerned dialogue about what’s real, what’s fake and the ramifications of ‘screen time.’ I purport to contribute to this conversation by creating a whimsical world that explores how we navigate between or integrate digital, physical and psychological realms. The creations encountered in Beyawnder are an attempt to counteract the constant flow of content from all three of these worlds by returning to the lines, shapes and forms made when we are first learning to draw and make our mark on the page and the world; just a pencil in hand and a page in front of us on which to have an experience.
