Statement

Melanie Garcia has been cutting and pasting for as long as she can remember, reveling in mixing of materials, images and textures.

During her BFA in Film Production at Concordia University, she began her work in large-format collage, creating in a digital context. After a period of art gestation, her work has transitioned back to analog, back to paper, tactile collages. Her work is concerned with unconscious and liminal spaces, metaphysics, the distortions and aesthetics of the human body and the spaces the body occupies.

Her work is inspired by Dada, Surrealism, and poetic cinema; referencing the depiction of places that are somewhere as much as nowhere. Her mixed-media collages cull from contemporary magazines, while integrating gestural use of charcoal, ink or paint. The mark-making anchor and illustrate the inexplicable realms, with anonymous limbs and bodies balancing in voids of darkness and lightness.
