Démarche

Les animaux peuplent mon travail depuis plus de 30 ans. C’est peut-être la synthèse des dessins animés du samedi matin et mon expérience en grandissant dans le Nord canadien qui ont influencé mes perceptions. Je préfère les animaux aux humains : ils ont plus d’intégrité. Ils me permettent d’aborder les relations de manière subvertie, obligeant le spectateur à creuser plus profondément s’il souhaite plus de sens.

Le paysage a toujours été un environnement mis en scène dans mon travail. Un décor pour les personnages qui jouent un rôle dans le récit. Mes œuvres s’apparentent davantage à une nature morte qu’à des peintures de paysage. Les paysages fournissent un cadre qui évoque la mémoire, mais pas la nostalgie. Ils incorporent un symbolisme historique et une expression littérale de ce qui se trouve derrière ma porte arrière.


Biographie

Le travail de Nachtigall examine les récits de la culture populaire qui imprègnent l’esprit du temps contemporain.

Le jeu est une pierre angulaire de sa pratique et masque souvent un message subversif qui reflète et critique la politique de notre époque.

Son approche sans complaisance est à la fois sardonique et philosophique, tirant un coup de semonce sur l’arc des fixations idéologiques. Une lésion cérébrale acquise au début de son adolescence a modifié son cerveau, entraînant une désinhibition qui a vu son travail à la fois célébré et censuré.

Le formalisme entre en collision avec une sensibilité punk rock. Ses remixages de la culture pop explorent l’espace liminal entre l’environnement naturel et construit. Le règne animal agit comme notre mandataire, car ses peintures sont sensiblement dépourvues de la figure humaine, remplacée par un bestiaire coloré qui gambade dans des paysages fantastiques qui font écho à des scènes de fiction spéculative.

Le pragmatisme est la clé de sa méthodologie, car il utilise une approche égalitaire des matériaux, des sujets et des marques, ignorant et défiant les hiérarchies traditionnelles et historiques du monde de l’art. Ces sensibilités de l’art supérieur et de l’art inférieur convergent pour donner lieu à des récits non linéaires qui engagent le spectateur en tant que participant actif, lui demandant de terminer la conversation que la peinture commence.
